Concrete Walkways Built for Orlando Yards

Walkways carry people, bikes and a loaded wheelbarrow now and then. The loads are light. The problems come from underneath, same as with driveways - sand that washes out by a downspout, oak roots pushing up a panel, a base nobody bothered to compact because it was "just a sidewalk."

Orlando yards add a few of their own. Sprinkler lines run everywhere. St. Augustine grass creeps over the edges. Mulch beds sit higher than the concrete and wash onto it every storm. We plan each walkway around all of that so it stays level, sheds water to the side and doesn't turn into a trip hazard a few years in.

Our Concrete Sidewalk and Walkway Installation Process

  1. 01Layout. We stake and string the path, check the width and set the elevation so it meets the porch, driveway or patio cleanly. Most front walks feel right at 4 feet wide, and 3 feet is about the minimum for a side-yard path.
  2. 02Locates and sleeves. Sunshine 811 gets called before digging. If you have irrigation or low-voltage lighting, we lay PVC sleeves under the walkway so future lines can pass through without cutting concrete.
  3. 03Excavation and base. Sod, roots and soft soil come out. Clean fill goes in where needed and gets compacted until it's firm.
  4. 04Forms and reinforcement. Forms set the shape, curves included. Wire mesh or fiber goes in, plus isolation joint material where the walk meets the house, the driveway or a step.
  5. 05Pour and finish. We place the concrete, screed it, edge it and broom it across the path for traction. Control joints go in about every 4 to 5 feet on a standard walk.
  6. 06Cure and cleanup. Curing compound goes on right after finishing. We backfill the edges with soil so the grass grows back up to the concrete.

Sidewalk and Walkway Design Options in Orlando

Straight walks form quickly and cost the least. A gentle curve from the driveway to the porch takes more forming time and looks a lot softer next to landscaping, and that layout suits the bungalows around College Park and Audubon Park.

Finish options include standard broom, a smooth troweled border around a broom center, exposed aggregate and stamped concrete walkways in slate or brick patterns. Integral color can tie a new walk into a concrete patio or driveway.

Width matters for daily use. A 3-foot walk works for one person. Two people side by side, or somebody rolling a trash can to the curb, need 4 to 5 feet. If anyone in the house uses a wheelchair or walker, we can build to accessible widths and slopes and pour a gentle ramp at the porch where a step would otherwise go.

What Affects Concrete Walkway Cost in Orlando

  • Length and width: square footage sets the baseline.
  • Tear-out: removing old concrete, pavers or stepping stones adds demolition and haul-off.
  • Shape: curves and tight radiuses take more forming time.
  • Access: walkways inside fenced backyards may need concrete moved by buggy or pump.
  • Finish: broom costs the least. Exposed aggregate, color and stamping cost more.
  • Public sidewalk work: replacing a section of sidewalk along the street falls under City of Orlando right-of-way rules and usually needs approval first.

Each item shows up separately on your written estimate.

Orlando Conditions Our Walkway Contractors Plan Around

Water comes first. Walkways often run right along the house, which is where gutters and downspouts dump everything during a storm. We give the walk a slight cross slope so water runs off into the yard, and when a downspout is aimed straight at the concrete, we'll point it out on the estimate.

Roots are the other big one. Orlando's oaks spread wide, and a walkway 15 feet from the trunk can still sit on top of major roots. When we hit them during excavation, we decide on-site whether to shift the path, add a root barrier or cut small roots, and we talk it through with you before cutting anything big.

Thin sections like walkways dry fast in summer sun. We pour early and get curing compound down quickly.

Common Sidewalk Problems and How We Fix Them

Raised panels from roots. Sunken panels by the downspouts. Cracks straight across the middle of a panel, and edges that crumbled because the concrete was poured too thin. A raised edge of half an inch is enough to catch a toe, and on a front walk that's a liability.

One or two bad panels can usually be cut out and replaced without redoing the whole walk. Small cracks and worn surfaces may only need concrete repair and resurfacing. When most of the walk has heaved or broken up, replacing it usually makes more sense than patching panel by panel, and we'll show you where the damage is before you decide.

What to Expect From Our Concrete Sidewalk Contractors

Most walkways take a day of prep and one pour day. Your written estimate lists width, thickness, finish and cleanup. We keep foot traffic off the new concrete with stakes and tape, and you can usually walk on it after 24 to 48 hours. When we finish, the old concrete is gone and the edges are backfilled so you're not stepping off into a trench.

A walkway gets used every single day, so a half-inch lip in the wrong spot matters more than people expect.
